How to Take Good Photos of Animals
0If you love taking pictures of wildlife then this article will be sure to give you some helpful tips that you can start using today. Animal photography, also called wildlife photography, encompasses the entire world of animals from your pets to polar bears. This article focuses on photographing wildlife, but you can apply many of these tips to photographing Muffin or Fido. To learn how nature photographers get those amazing wildlife photos, read on and learn how you can too.
The photography basics for taking great pictures of wildlife begin with these tips. As always there are exceptions, but the following go a long ways towards ensuring successful animal photography:
- Use natural lighting to your advantage
- Fill the frame with the subject
- Focus on the eyes
- Shoot from various angles
- Capture personality
Perhaps you are wondering how you can, without a huge lens and SLR safely get close enough to a wild animal to “capture their personality” or “fill the frame”?
Actually even professional wildlife photographers don’t always take their winning photographs in the wild. Many of the photographs of polar bears, tigers and other wild creatures were taken at wildlife sanctuaries and zoos. Cheating? Maybe, but it’s safer for the photographer and doesn’t disturb their free roaming cousins’ mating and feeding cycles.
Some of the wildlife sanctuaries offer special tours for photographers, but even without the advantages these tours offer (often being allowed to get closer shots and without all the people), there are many things the hobbyist with a compact can do to take professional looking photographs of wildlife.
Animal Photography Tips for Zoos and Sanctuaries
1) Simplify the Composition: If the background is distracting, use a wide aperture or Portrait mode to blur it. Or use a photo editor like Photoshop to clean up or blur the background.
2) Go Natural: Avoid showing cage bars, fences, humans, signs, etc. If it is safe and not against the rules, point the lens through the gap in the fence so you can take a picture without showing the fence. Sometimes there will be a vantage point that allows you to shoot over the top of the fence. Look for areas like these that are perfect for a photo. Again, use a good photo editing software to blur what you couldn’t get rid of while taking your picture.
3) Fill the Frame: Use zoom (optical for best quality) or a telephoto lens to get close ups.
4) Use Sports Mode: Use Sports mode or set shutter speed priority to around 1/250 to freeze movements.
5) Use Light and Weather to Best Effect: Overcast days are often best for animal photography. If the overcast light isn’t super bright, it will help minimize glare from water or light colored backgrounds. If the overcast is too dark and you have an SLR, increase the ISO to compensate for the dark lighting. With the right amount of overcast lighting, you can get well exposed sharp images with your compact camera without any of the animals squinting.
Since the eyes are usually very expressive and the best place to focus, you really want to avoid squinting. Another way to eliminate this is to photograph when the animal’s back is to sun. In this situation, you’ll need to use flash fill (turn off the automatic flash and set to “on”) to prevent underexposure or a silhouette. You will also need to wear a broad brimmed hat or use a lens hood to prevent lens flare.
6) Try this When Shooting through Glass: When you want a picture of a terrarium or aquarium critter, turn on the flash and shoot from an angle. Be sure to check your camera manual for the safe distance when taking pictures with a flash of any creature otherwise you could damage their eyes. Or turn off the flash and gently press your lens right up against the glass.
7) Plan your Visits for the Best Photo Ops: Many people will especially love seeing your animal photography when it includes baby animals. Often sanctuaries and zoos post on their websites when new babies are arriving, or you can call and check. Another good photo op is feeding time. Animals that stay in hiding throughout much of the day will come out to eat. Finally, if you’re visiting a sanctuary or zoo when the weather’s hot, go early in the day when the animals will be most active, not napping.
8) Use Context: While usually it’s best to fill the frame with the animal, sometimes the context is too interesting to bypass. Examples of using context: a child and baby animal looking at each other, a giraffe, long neck bent as it peers down at a car in front of yours at the drive-through safari park.
9) Capture Expressions: Animals, whether our pets or wildlife, make the cutest expressions. Be ready with your camera! Even just normal expressions like a wolf pup yawning or a tiger licking its lips are cute or interesting. The more you understand the habits and behaviors of the animal you’re trying to take pictures of, the better chance you’ll have of capturing a great photo of them.
And once you get a few animal or wildlife pictures that you love, don’t forget to display them in picture frames. When selecting a frame, just make sure that you don’t choose a frame that overpowers your picture like a bright red picture frame or a fancy unique picture frame. All you want is a frame with simple clean lines in a material like wood or metal that adds a nice accent to the image.
So, the next time you’re ready to take some wildlife pictures, use these animal photo tips and you’ll be amazed at the difference applying this tips can have on your photos.
Digital Photography Basics -Why You Should Choose a Digital Compact vs DSLR
0The basics of digital photography are pretty much the same whether you’re using a digital compact or DSLR (also referred to simply as an SLR), but there are a few important differences.
Digital Compacts
One of the biggest advantages to digital compacts is the cost. Another thing to consider when buying a DSLR is that you will need to purchase at least one lens for your camera especially if you want to take distant photographs. Digital compacts always come with a built in lens and sometimes even come with a zoom.
If you have an optical zoom on your digital compact, you can get some good quality telephoto shots too. An optical zoom is always far better than a digital zoom because a digital zoom works like cropping – it takes away pixels. The more you zoom with a digital zoom the lower the image quality. Unlike regular zooms, an optical zoom maintains the quality of your picture.
Some compacts will take such high quality images that many a pro will use one when they don’t want to carry all of their DSLR gear. The quality of the photograph is largely dependent upon the photographer’s skill.
While digital compacts don’t have as many mega pixels as DSLRs, with only 5 mega pixels, you can produce an 8×10 print of the type of quality you’d be proud to display in an 8×10 picture frame on your wall.
Finally, learning the digital photography basics of a compact is far easier then learning how to use a DSLR to its full advantage.
Digital Single Lens Reflexes (DSLRs)
A Digital SLR is the digital version of a single lens reflex camera or SLR. You can call a DSLR a single lens reflex camera but you can’t call an SLR a digital camera. With the debut of the Canon Rebel and other more moderately priced DSLRs (relatively speaking) a few years ago, more photography enthusiasts are discovering the advantages of a DSLR.
The big advantage of the DSLR is its creativity and versatility.
For example, by using a long telephoto lens you can take a close up of an eagle on the top of a tree and you’ll never be able to tell from the picture that he was so far away. With a DSLR, you can find all kinds of accessories to suit almost any photographer’s need.
Another benefit of DSLRs is their ability to take sharp pictures of sports or action photos in low light situations where a flash won’t work. The larger sensor on a DSLR allows you to do this; whereas with a compact, if you set the ISO high enough to take the shot in the dim light, it would have digital noise (sort of a multi colored grain). If you’re taking still shots, it’s not an issue. The problem with Sports mode in a low light setting is that the shutter must close so fast that in spite of a larger aperture setting, there’s just not enough light hitting the image sensor. The only way this can be compensated for is with a flash or a higher ISO setting.
However, you can get rid of most digital noise by using photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop.
Another DSLR advantage is that you can use an external flash which can make a huge difference.
DSLRs have more megapixels than the best of the digital compacts, meaning you can take and print high quality pictures for framing in large picture frames like 11×14 frames or larger.. Finally, digital cameras are slower to take the picture, but DSLRs are far faster than compacts.
Remember, digital photography basics start with choosing a camera, but the quality of the photographs largely depend on the skill of the photographer. Regardless of what type of camera you have or will be buying, you have to be willing to practice and enjoy taking lots of pictures with your camera.
How It Happened: Brief but Glorious History of Glamour Images
0Artistic Glamour Photography is a relatively young artistic genre, yet it already boasts impressive and rich historic legacy, possesses its own legendary characters and turning points. Glamour photography has seen a number of downfalls and artistic revolutions before it achieved its modern condition.
I will gladly take you on a short mind trip from the very dawn of Glamour Photos to their modern state – afterwards we will dabble in foreseeing their probable future.
Adolescence. It is a very controversial issue of where the history of glamour photography really begins. Some seek the roots in Paris of 1930′s, where so-called “french postcards” were sold in abundance – others deem Victorian photography and its gurus to be responsible. A few people consider that glamour photography can be traced as far back as Baroque and Renaissance art. Franskly speaking, the birth of glamour images cannot be discovered with any degree of certainty. What I think is that the most likely period in which glamour photography was born is 1920′s and 1930′s, which were quite a vibrant time in terms of arts and culture. Also, it is from the first half of XX century that the history of classic glamour photo can be traced.
Zenith of Glory and Later. Those were difficult but glorious years. Shining star of Betty Grable was in zenith ever since pre-WWII time; thank to Marylin Monroe beauty photography gained open support and recognition, as this world-famous actress appeared on Playboy’s front in 1953. There were also Pamela Green and others helping to bring this young art to its feet and conquer the world-wide audience.
Nowadays – Digital Fever. Color wasn’t the only achievement that glamour pictures acquired – they turned into something more creative and provocative. Hope Talmons and Dita Von Teese gave way to Heidie Van Horne, Bernie Dexter, Lucy Pinder and others. Additionally, digital format started dominating in photographic arts. It improved technical side of the process and altogether simplified it beyond measure. Any amateur with a DSLR became a potential glamour photographer. Due to rapid development of Internet technologies, a swarm of “people with cameras” emerged, awaiting recognition.
Are you Afraid of 3D? Finally, nowadays we face a new era, when 3D rendering easily re-creates that very glamour that we are so striving to deliver. 3D modeling is an art as well, and a complex one, but it seems to be taking over the field of glamour images. I really doubt that 3D-rendered beauty can better the genuinely beautiful model and a talented artist cannot be matched by a PC. If this is a struggle of old and modern, my side is with the former.
Never-the-less, I gaze in the future with a smile – after all, no art has ever been forgotten; oils and film have an army of admirers, as do many other genres. Artistic 3D may join these ranks, and so may whatever comes next. Technology rarely matters – inspiration and devotion are the most important pillars of any art. No real photographer ever forgets this – and I’m sure that neither will you.

Be a Better Affiliate Marketer
2Being an affiliate marketer is often a difficult enterprise. There is much more to learn than most of us anticipated when we first started. The learning curve is too steep for some, and many simply drop out.
The most frequent difficulty among failed or failing affiliate marketing enterprises is buying magical, secret strategies and not putting them into action to test if they actually work. Some are no more than buyers; they don’t even read the books or watch the videos they buy. I hope that you are among those who will remain committed over the long haul, consistently improving your knowledge base and actually applying what you learn by taking action. If not, please just stop reading, because you’ll simply waste money, and your business will fail, regardless.
There are two resources for affiliate marketers that I include in my recommendations. One has to do with using a marketing approach using blog entries, not only your blogs and websites but the blogs of many other businesses. This system is a very valuable membership site called MyArticleNetwork. I have described the way it works elsewhere (see that link). Here, I am going to describe one way that it can be used creatively by an affiliate marketer.
If you write an article for distribution via one or more article directories, your link is limited to the author’s resource box, usually placed at the bottom of the content. With this new system, you can put up to three links directly into the article itself. Contextual links are much more effective. Most of the major article directories will not allow you to use affiliate links in your own resource box. With this system, affiliate links are permitted. You can check it out for yourself by visiting this remarkable article marketing system that directly submits unique versions of your articles to blogs and websites in your niche from its list of over 10,000 sites anxious to receive content.
The other resource is a complete educational system established exclusively for affiliate marketers who are owners of various size businesses as well as those preparing for a career as an affiliate manager. This is a completely revamped reissue of Anik Singal’s famous Affiliate Classroom. Singal, who was named as one of four Business Week Magazine’s young entrepreneurs of 2008, has spent two years, along with his partner, revamping the critically acclaimed program to make it even more expansive and comprehensive. If you are truly serious about improving your affiliate marketing business, at least sign up to receive the full information.
As I write this, the product has not yet launched, so all you can do is sign up on the squeeze page to be continually updated. Depending upon when you read this article, it is possible that it will have already sold out. Check to see if they have established a waiting list. If so, sign up and hope that a space for you opens.
Anticipating a question that I would ask, yes, both of these have affiliate programs, but you can’t use your own affiliate links to purchase either membership. You must sign up for both prior to gaining access to the affiliate programs.
Long Awaited Opportunities for Affiliate Marketing Businesses
